Governor Ron DeSantis Announces Framework for Freedom Budget Committing Historic Funding for Disaster Preparedness, Recovery and Resiliency

Yesterday, Governor Ron DeSantis announced historic funding for disaster preparedness and recovery to achieve a more resilient state and strengthen Florida's future disaster response capabilities.

"Over the last few months, Governor Ron DeSantis has worked diligently to cut through bureaucratic red tape and enable the Division to carry out our fastest and most successful disaster response activities to date," said Florida Division of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie. “His budget recommendations prove his commitment to developing resilient communities and securing Florida’s continued ranking as an international leader in the field of emergency management.”

In the last year, the Division has led exemplary disaster response and recovery efforts in responding to Hurricanes Ian and Nicole that caused widespread damage in Florida, as well as isolated weather events and a surge in migration along Florida’s coastlines.

Funding for the Division of Emergency Management in Governor DeSantis’ Framework For Freedom Budget proposal includes:

  • $2.1 billion in federal and state funding so that communities and the state can respond to and recover from major disasters or emergencies as well as mitigate against future disasters or emergencies.
  • $117 million to construct three new warehouses and implement a state-of-the-art warehouse management system to better inventory needed supplies for disasters, reduce waste, and ensure the state is fully stocked and prepared for any future emergency needs.
  • $10 million to support eight Florida Urban Search and Rescue Teams.
  • $15.6 million for community disaster mitigation and risk reduction initiatives.

$6.4 million for a new State Flood Mitigation Grant Program.
