Gov. Scott: Nearly 270 Florida Volunteers Deployed to Texas and Louisiana

Governor Rick Scott continued to thank Florida volunteer organizations responding to the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey. Nearly 270 Florida volunteers have already deployed to Texas and Louisiana and Volunteer Florida is coordinating the activities of ten disaster relief organizations. Volunteer Florida Director of Emergency Management Ken Skalitzky has also deployed to Texas to establish a multi-state warehouse and coordinate volunteers and donations onsite.

Governor Scott said, “Florida knows firsthand how helpful the work of volunteers can be following a hurricane, and we are proud of the hundreds of individuals that are supporting families affected by the storm. Nearly 270 Florida volunteers have deployed to Texas and Louisiana through organizations like the American Red Cross, Salvation Army and Florida Baptist Convention, and I know that countless other Floridians across the state are also doing their part. I encourage Florida businesses and families who would like to donate to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts to contact reputable charitable organizations helping those in need. We will continue to coordinate closely with Texas and Louisiana to help these states during this challenging time.”

Volunteer organizations are asking those wishing to help to donate to a recognized, non-profit organization operating in Texas. A list of agencies may be found at www.nvoad.org

Current Florida-based volunteer efforts from the American Red Cross, Salvation Army and Florida Baptist Convention are as follows:

  • The American Red Cross has deployed 73 staff to impacted areas;

  • Volunteers with the Salvation Army have two shower trailers, two bunkhouses, one generator and more than 43 volunteers that have provided more than 1,200 volunteer hours; and

The Florida Baptist Convention will deploy more than 50 volunteers to Louisiana on Friday to provide feeding, chainsaw and roofing teams, and portable showers.
