May North Florida Severe Weather Updates

The Request for Public Assistance (RPA) Deadline is July 27, 2024 for for all Applicants in Baker, Gadsden, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lafayette, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Santa Rosa, Suwannee, Taylor, and Wakulla Counties and August 15, 2024 for Columbia County.

Public Assistance is available to State, Territorial, Tribal, and Local governments, and certain types of private nonprofit organizations. The Division hosts Applicant Briefings for potential applicants.  Applicant Briefings provide an overview of the following:

  • Administrative and procurement requirements
  • Special considerations

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Assistance

Individual Assistance is available to individuals and households in need of financial and direct services who have uninsured or underinsured necessary expenses and serious needs. Impacted individuals with insurance are encouraged to apply.

Individual Assistance is available in Leon County. Individuals can apply in multiple ways:

Florida homeowners and renters who registered for FEMA disaster assistance after the North Florida severe weather should stay in touch with FEMA to ensure the disaster assistance process stays on track.

Survivors should update contact information as soon as possible because FEMA may need to reach them to perform virtual home inspections or get additional information.

FEMA encourages survivors to request direct deposits of disaster assistance to their financial institution. Survivors should let FEMA know as soon as possible of any changes to their banking information.

It’s important to note that FEMA disaster assistance checks cannot be forwarded. If you cannot access your home address, you can request the postal service to hold your mail.

Disaster Recovery Centers

If you are in need of resources & information about recovery programs & disaster assistance you can visit our Disaster Recovery Centers. Centers are open 7 days a week. Please note times based on location.

  • Leon County: LeRoy Collins Leon County Library, 200 West Park Avenue, Tallahassee, Florida 32301
  • Hours of operation: Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday through Sunday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The center will be closed on Thursday, July 4. *No appointment is necessary to visit a Disaster Recovery Center.

  • Mobile Disaster Recovery Centers:

      • Monday, July 1 to Friday, July 5, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. This center is closed on July 4.

On Monday, May 13, Governor Ron DeSantis activated the Florida Small Business Emergency Bridge Loan Program, making $2 million available for businesses impacted by the recent severe weather that impacted North Florida. Florida small business owners in need of assistance are encouraged to visit www.FloridaJobs.org/EBL to apply for the Florida Small Business Emergency Bridge Loan Program. Businesses in Baker, Columbia, Escambia, Gadsden, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lafayette, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Suwannee, Taylor, and Wakulla counties, including sole proprietors, are eligible to apply. 

The program provides short-term, zero-interest loans to small businesses that experienced economic injury or physical damage due to May North Florida Severe Storms, Straight-Line Winds, and Tornados. Interested applicants can apply now through July 10, 2024, or until all available funds are expended.

DBPR encourages Florida’s licensed contractors who are looking to help property owners in need of post-storm construction-related services to register with its Florida Disaster Contractors Network at DCNOnline.org. Once homeowners are safely able to assess their home repair needs, DBPR encourages them to log onto DCNOnline.org and search by county for a list of Florida-licensed contractors providing these services in their community.

Florida’s Business Damage Assessment Survey is now activated to assess the needs of Florida business owners impacted by the May North Florida Severe Storms, Straight-Line Winds, and Tornados. If your business was affected by the storm, please fill out the survey >> bit.ly/3yfYfsi

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is reminding businesses, private nonprofit organizations, homeowners and renters in Florida affected by the severe storms, straight-line winds, and tornadoes on May 10 to apply for physical damage disaster loans by the Aug. 16 deadline.

Applicants can still get assistance at SBA’s Business Recovery Center (BRC) in Tallahassee. Customer Service Representatives at the BRC will help business owners complete their disaster loan application, accept documents, and provide updates on an application’s status. Walk-ins are accepted, but you can schedule an in-person appointment at an SBA Disaster Recovery Center in advance. The Center address and hours of operation are indicated below.

While living in and visiting Florida offers many benefits and advantages, it is important to keep in mind severe weather hazards and potential threats. Every family and business should have predefined emergency plans and always keep an emergency supply kit ready and stocked.

Each Florida county has a designated emergency management program, and residents, businesses, and visitors should also visit their county's emergency management for the most up-to-date and locally significant information.
