Gov. Scott Appreciates Bryan Koon’s Years of Service to Florida

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Today, Governor Rick Scott announced Director Bryan Koon’s resignation from the Florida Division of Emergency Management (DEM), which will be effective on October 1, 2017. On September 1, Koon notified Governor Scott of his intention to resign to pursue an opportunity in the private sector. The Governor asked him to remain in his position throughout the month of September due to potential hurricanes forming in the Atlantic. Bryan Koon has served as Director of DEM since 2011. Today, Governor Scott announced Wes Maul, currently serving as Chief of Staff at DEM, as Interim Director.

Governor Scott said, “At the very beginning of my administration, I was proud to appoint Bryan Koon as Director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management. Under Bryan’s leadership, Florida has been recognized as a national leader in emergency preparedness. Since day one, Bryan has done an excellent job ensuring our state is prepared and able to respond to countless weather events including Hurricanes Hermine, Matthew and Irma. I appreciate Bryan’s willingness to stay on as we prepared for, responded to and now recover from Hurricane Irma. I wish Bryan and his family the very best in this next chapter of their lives.

“Wes Maul has been a valued member of my team since 2013 and has shown incredible leadership in his service to our state. As Chief of Staff at DEM, Wes has worked countless hours helping lead our state through Hurricanes Hermine, Matthew and now Irma. Since earning his law degree at the University of Florida, Wes has devoted his life to serving the families of our state and I am confident in his ability to lead DEM as Interim Director as we continue to recover from Hurricane Irma.”

Prior to his appointment as Director, Bryan Koon served as Director of Emergency Management for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., where he was responsible for the emergency management operations of over 8,500 facilities worldwide. Koon also served in the White House Military Office where he developed, maintained and implemented high level, classified programs to ensure continuity of government and continuity of operations in the wake of a tactical or natural disaster. He also served our nation with distinction as a Surface Warfare Officer in the United States Navy, both active duty and in the Navy Reserve.

Wes Maul has served as Chief of Staff at DEM since May 2016. Prior to joining DEM, Wes served as Special Assistant to Governor Scott from 2013 to 2016. Wes received both his Bachelor of Science and Juris Doctor degrees from the University of Florida.
