Hurricane Evacuation Shelter Evaluation (HESE) Course

G-626 Hurricane Evacuation Shelter Evaluation Guidelines Course:   This two day course is a technical presentation of procedures recommended for evaluation of hurricane shelters and other critical facilities. This procedure is based upon the American Red Cross' supplement Standards for Hurricane Evacuation Shelter Selection (ARC 4496, Jan 2002).

Prerequisite:  It is recommended that the participants have a working knowledge of building construction principals and practices and basic blue print reading skills.

Selection Criteria:  This course is offered to local officials that have a role in evaluating and selecting facilities for use during hurricanes and other high wind events. The primary audience for this course is building officials, building inspectors, plans examiners, construction managers, school board facilities management officials and building construction contractors. Emergency management and other agency personnel with hurricane shelter operations responsibilities are also encouraged to attend.

Course Credit Information:  This course can receive contact hours from the following organization upon course completion:

1. 14 continuing education contact hours by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) (Course # 04G0365-9)

2. Florida Building Code Administrators and Inspectors (BCAI) Board accepts the 14 CILB contact hours through a reciprocity agreement

3. 17 contact hours from the Florida Board of Architecture (Course # AR.06.519A)

4. 14 contact hours awarded toward the renewal of Fire Safety Inspector and Inspector Instructor from the State of Florida, Department of Insurance, Bureau of Fire Standards.

There is no fee for attending the class, and course related materials are provided at no cost.

Course Applicants:  Please contact your local Emergency Management office to apply for a course.  DEM personnel do not select course participants. 

Course Ordering and Size:  The preferred class size is 12-16 participants, with a  maximum class size of 20 participants. All course applicants wishing to enroll in the course should contact the local emergency management office sponsoring the course.  Emergency management agencies interested in hosting a course should contact Dean Griffin at (850) 413-9954.
