As more and more Floridians take steps to strengthen their homes against natural disasters, Florida's contractors will serve as an important partner for the homeowner in creating a stronger home and ultimately, a safer community. As a contractor, you'll find the following links helpful as you work to protect your clients and their homes from natural disasters.
• Blueprint for Safety®: Citizens Property Insurance Corporation was created to make sure that every Florida homeowner has access to homeowner's insurance even if they can't get coverage from a private insurer. Citizens works hard to help reduce the wind insurance premium for its policy holders by providing discounts based on the type of home a person has and also based on retrofits the homeowner undertakes to increase the homes' hurricane resistance rating.
• Build to Fortified Standards: As a contractor, you build to a standard of quality on every home that says something about your company long after the last nail is driven. But nature's fury can undo in just a few minutes the quality and workmanship that should have lasted for years. That's why the Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) developed Fortified...for safer living®, an inspection and site location-based program that any builder can employ to make a home more disaster-resistant.
• Disaster Contractors Network: Having the right contractor can make all the difference in helping your hurricane retrofit project run smoothly. The My Safe Florida Home program has developed a list of contractors certified to perform retrofits in conjunction with the My Safe Florida Home program. While your retrofit project may not involve the My Safe Florida Home program, using the Contractor Search Tool on the My Safe Florida Home website is a helpful way for you to locate a contractor.
